Tips for Changing Things Up on Your Walls
November 27, 2014Choosing the colors of your home can be rather nerve-wracking. After all, once it’s chosen, it’s going to be that way for some time to come. Sure, you can go ahead and repaint your entire home, but that sounds rather exhausting doesn’t it, especially after you’ve already moved in. Plus, it’s expensive! Not, it’s far better to instead do your due diligence and learn about just how best to mix and match the colors of the walls of your home. One thing to watch out for is the temptation to pick a room’s single color and run with it entirely; you’re missing out on the strength and vibrancy that an accent wall brings to your room, rather than painting every wall a single, monochromatic color.
Beige & Beyond
For example, let’s say that you’ve settled on a light gray-beige wall color. This isn’t an unusual choice; it is solid, somewhat nondescript, yet off-white enough to make sure that the room isn’t just another eggshell white room, one that looks unfinished and uncomfortable. Yet despite the wisdom of a choice like this, you end up creating an entirely-too-uniform look for the room by painting it entirely in these colors. Instead, you’re far better off painting it using an accent wall – a wall that is darker than the color you’ve chosen for the room, remarkably so, in order to truly help the color you chose stand out.
Art and Walls
Understanding the importance of accent walls goes back to understanding color and art – and make no mistake, painting a home is very much an art. The human eye passes over more of the same all the time; we’re trained to see colors, to hear sounds, and to experience movement in such a vast variety and quantity that we simply come to block it all out for our own sanity and peace of mind. In the stillness of your home, however, the accent wall acts to reawaken your eye for color, demonstrating the depth and vibrancy of the color you chose. Don’t let those colors you chose pass you, or anyone else, by!
