8 of the Best Things About Quarryville
October 25, 2017Quarryville is a sleepy town full of picturesque views, expansive countryside, and unique events for the whole family. Here are a few destinations, events, and places you can explore while visiting the Susquehanna Valley.
1. Hans Herr House
The Hans Herr House has plenty to see and do. Built in 1719, this homestead is the oldest building in Lancaster County. It’s also the oldest place for Mennonite worship in North America.
On the property, there are three homes that date back from 1719 to 1900. Each building features agricultural implements, and showcases practices of daily life from each period. Volunteers demonstrate everyday tasks from each timeline in their respective buildings. Volunteers also tend to the stunning gardens throughout the property.
Along with the homesteads, the Hans Herr House also has guided tours, bus parking, and a gift shop. The Hans Herr House is open after March 31 until the first weekend of December every year. The homestead is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
2. Baumgardener’s Covered Bridge
Built in 1860, the Baumgardener’s Covered Bridge stands at 120 feet long and 15 feet wide. Although it’s off the beaten path, it’s worth the trip for the scenic views and beautiful architecture. So, pack a picnic basket and get ready for the perfect afternoon by Pequea Creek!
3. Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard
This family-owned winery features tastings, wine and cheese parties, and stunning views for visitors to drink in. The Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard offers day and night hours and a charming wedding venue.
Tastings are $10 a person. Food is usually available via food trucks on the grounds. The winery is closed on Monday, but is open to the public Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1a a.m. to 5 p.m.
4. The Buck
If you’re looking for something a little different, you may want to visit Quarryville’s The Buck. The Buck, or Buck Motorsports, features a “Schedule of Fun” including everything from tractor pulls to demolition derbies. The Buck refers to itself as “high horsepower family fun and entertainment”.
It offers two merchandise locations, autograph sessions, and pit parties after shows, and even camping for people to rough it while enjoying a monster truck show or Mud Bog event. 5. Maplehofe Dairy
Founded in 1974, the Maplehofe Dairy has grown exponentially. In addition to their original processing plant, which is still in use, they have a dairy stand, bulk foods store, and now a stand in the Lancaster City Central Market. Since 2015, they have added another processing plant and Maplehofe plans to continue its growth.
Maplehofe Dairy offers over 40 flavors of Leiby’s ice cream in their Quarryville store along with other confectionary treats. The dairy also has a glass exchange for their milk and other products in order to cut down on waste. Maplehofe also sells yogurt, eggs, produce, fruit drinks, peanut butter, bread, and bulk food options. They are open Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
6. Robert Fulton Birthplace
The Robert Fulton homestead was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from the Swift family. It was then redesigned to represent the period during the time Robert Fulton was born. Now, the Robert Fulton Birthplace features artifacts and practices that mirror Robert Fulton’s life and beautiful gardens with plants and tools used during the colonial period.
Visiting hours are Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends only. The homestead is open Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is open Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day as well. Other hours and group tours are by appointment.
7. Tanglewood Manor Golf Course
For avid golfers, Tanglewood Manor Golf Course has affordable memberships, beautiful courses, and fun events that are perfect for the whole family. You can purchase a trial pass to tour the grounds, play a round or two, visit the clubs, and enjoy the stunning views. If you decide to purchase a membership, you can choose from a family or individual membership that suits your schedule and budget.
8. Susquehanna River
If you love sailing, boating, or tubing, the southern end of the Susquehanna River can be a perfect place to spend the warmer months of the year. The Susquehanna offers plenty of uninhabited islands to explore and fish.
Be sure to have any boats you may use registered and keep your fishing license up-to-date. The Susquehanna River is a beautiful space, and the county of Lancaster wants to keep it safe and pristine.
