Which is Better: Brick Walkway or Stamped Concrete?

December 22, 2015

Deciding whether to create a walkway can be a bit of work if you do not put some thought into it. By considering the benefits and limits of your options you will find what is best for you and your home.

Brick Walkway

Having a brick walkway can perk up your exterior and create a sustainable piece in your landscaping. Building a brick walkway only needs to be a weekend commitment and will take one trip to the hardware store (unless you absolutely need that massive fruit tree).

You need one inch of gravel down on the desired path and then four inches of sand. After that you can begin placing the bricks in the pattern you can either prepare or get at the hardware store. Afterward you may want to sweep more sand into the cracks to create an even pathway.

Designing a brick walkway can be difficult, however. While it does not require a large time commitment initially, it does as time goes on as weeds begin to grow between the cracks and move the bricks. To keep the weeds at bay, weed once in the spring, summer, and fall and sweep new sand into the crevices once a year. This will keep the walkway looking great.

Stamped Concrete

If you do not have the time or energy to create your own walkway or do not want to have the maintenance you can always invest in stamped concrete. This allows more creativity in patterns, colors, and style than brick walkway and has virtually no maintenance required. Many companies who install the concrete will be able to mix types, textures, and colors to make whatever you need.

Concrete will also give you an opportunity to add other pieces to your landscape. If you use stamped concrete to create a patio or an entertaining area you can put a fire pit, Jacuzzi, or seating for you and your friends and family.

Stamped concrete will, however, be more of an investment initially and is only done by professionals. This will also mean there will be more time the employees will be at your home which may create some inconvenience.

If you decide to work with stamped concrete be sure to get a quote up front and to research the company before hand. This will help you find out the price range and what creative options you have.

By researching all your options and considering your home and ability you will be able to create the perfect path.
