A home gym can be an easy way to stay active. With these tips for designing a home gym, keeping a New Year’s resolution will be easy.

1. Clear The Space

If you want to build a home gym in your custom home or existing home you will need to decide what space is best for your gym and begin organizing it to fit your needs and lifestyle. If you are building a custom home this can be a simple as adding a new room onto the blueprints or working with your contractor. This is usually a quick and easy addition if the home is still in the foundational or planning stages. If you decide during the build you want to add a new room you will need to plan with your contractor and possibly make a few compromises. That being said, though, your contractor will do everything they can to create a home perfect for you.

2. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

While it may seem vain, a mirror in your gym is essential to practice proper form and continue your progress. If you are learning new choreography, yoga poses, or exercise techniques it is essential you do so properly and safely. A mirror is a great way to check yourself to avoid injury and possible aches and pains. They may say, “No pain, no gain,” but there can be some serious limitations to that idea.

3. Focus Areas

While you will want to research gym equipment you will also want to consider what you will want to do in your workouts. If you decide to focus on practicing yoga, you will need a yoga mat or two, yoga blocks, a yoga strap (trust me, they are awesome), and someone to follow if you’re a beginner. 

If you’re focusing more on weightlifting or strength training it is a great idea to invest in a sturdy gym mat, gym flooring, and dumbbells to start. From there you can consider and research equipment, technique, and education. Once you know what you want out of your workout it will be much easier for you to focus your energy and time into becoming fit and healthy.

4. Find The Essentials

There are home gym must-haves and also essentials is usually a short list comprised of items you will need throughout your workout no matter the focus. Here’s a short list:

1. Water bottle
2. Gym towel
3. Wet wipes (to clean equipment)
4. Exercise or yoga mat
5. Stability ball
6. Dumbbells
7. Running or athletic shoes
8. Medicine balls
9. Foam roller
10. And an amazing playlist!
