How to Outsmart Summer Danger

August 11, 2016

Whether you’re working or playing outside in the summer, anybody not accustomed to the heat is at risk for a heat-related illness. To avoid heat sickness, heat stroke, or heat exhaustion here are a few tips to help you beat the heat and enjoy your summer.

Take steps to protect yourself:

Wear Appropriate Clothing, Including a Wide-Brimmed Hat

It is best to wear light clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. I suggest wearing light fabrics that are in light colors. This will keep you cool while your skin is protected from the sun. This is a good practice to do while working in the garden or doing any yard work. Working outside can be especially exhausting if you are not careful. You will also want to take plenty of breaks by going inside. Every hour take 20 minutes to cool off and go back inside. This will give you a chance to catch your breath and get a glass of water.

Take Frequent Water Breaks

Speaking of water, always, always, always take water breaks. This keeps you from overheating, you will stay hydrated and you will be able to fully enjoy your summer. If you need something with a bit more flavor we suggest an unsweetened iced tea or haymaker’s punch. Here is a great recipe that you will find tasty and refreshing.

Refreshing Iced Tea Recipe

You Will Need:

  • 4 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 8 teaspoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Mix all ingredients together and let sit overnight at room temperature. The next day pour over ice and enjoy!

Apply Sunscreen with an SPF of at Least 35

Sunscreen is incredibly important to apply everyday summer or winter. This can help avoid wrinkles, skin spots, and cancer. Use a sunscreen every day that is at least SPF 35. This will keep your skin from being damaged by UV rays. Be sure to pout it on any exposed skin and to do so at least once every two and a half hours. If you are by a body of water such as a beach, lake, or river you are further exposed to the rays. Then you will want to reapply every hour or hour and a half.

Never Leave Kids or Pets Unattended in a Vehicle

Never ever leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle. Vehicles will become incredibly hot surprisingly fast. This can cause heat exhausted, heat stroke, or even death. Bring your children and pets inside with you so they stay safe and happy.
