Pergola vs Patio: What’s the Difference?

November 29, 2016

Outdoor spaces can be wonderful and relaxing during the spring, summer, and even part of the fall. Pergolas and patios can be formatted to your wants and needs, offer a lot of amenities, and both have their positives and negatives. If you are thinking about building a custom home with an outdoor space or attaching a new addition, there are a few things you will want to consider. Think about what will fit best in your home, with your family, and in your life.

Pergola

Pergolas can be beautiful and organic additions to your home. They are easily customizable and can offer plenty of space for relaxing or entertaining. While some believe pergolas cannot be attached to your home, many can be as pergola coverings. While some will not be attached to your home, like a patio or addition, they can still be close to your home and even be semi-attached. Pergolas can also be used to display beautiful vines and flowers on the roof. This is great if you have a fire pit or a grill so there is plenty of ventilation and it offers an open but sheltered area from the elements.

Patio

Unlike pergolas, patios can be fully attached and completely enclosed. Patios are wonderful to use all year round and can be used for plenty of different reasons. While many love to use the patio as an entertainment or rumpus room it can also be used as a greenhouse, a summer kitchen, or a workout room. While pergolas are beautiful spaces they are not as versatile as a patio. Patios, however, can have a large heating and air conditioning bill if not properly installed.

Patios and pergolas are great ways to add space to your home. They can be relaxing outdoor entertainment areas or they can offer a plethora of other room options.
