Firework Safety Tips to Practice This Fourth of July

July 5, 2016

The fourth of July is one of the biggest events of the summer — but it can bring an increase in injuries. In 2010, fireworks caused estimated 15,500-reported fires, including 1,100 structure fires. While you may be excited about pyrotechnics and sparklers, there are a few things you should consider to stay safe.

1. Don’t Drink and Light

While drinking is a common tradition for Independence Day those that are orchestrating the fireworks should abstain to keep everyone safe and flame-free. Be sure to drink responsibly if you are not handling fireworks and to stay at a safe distance. If you are handling the fireworks be sure to wait to drink until all the fireworks are safely put out or away from any possible flames. Always use caution when extinguishing the fireworks. Be sure to walk the perimeter of the yard when done to make sure there are no embers that could catch fire.

2. Have a Plan

Have a set up for your fireworks. It is best to stabilize the fireworks in PVC pipes or cinder blocks. You should also be sure to put the fireworks on a flat, stable service. This can be on the ground, on the concrete patio, or on a raised fire-safe table. Be sure to also have plenty of water and a fire extinguisher on hand. This way if a fire starts there will be plenty of resources to stop it before it gets out of hand. After the festivities are done be sure all the possible fires are completely extinguished. This way there is will be no chance of s fire starting once everyone is inside.

3. Comfort Your Pooch

Pets have hearing that is hundreds if not thousands of times more sensitive than our own. While they may try not to show it the sound of fireworks can be incredibly disturbing and painful for them. They worry that their pack is under attack and will try to lash out or may cower if they feel trapped. If your family is going to be setting off fireworks be sure to keep it as far from your home as possible. Leave your kitten or pup at home where they feel safe and comfortable. You may also want to invest in a thunder coat for the evening. This will give your pet added security.
