3 Simple and Fun Winter Crafts for Adults
January 26, 2017Everyone gets antsy during the dead of winter when leaving the home is not an option. So what do you do when the cookies are baked, the laundry is done, and the Netflix has been watched? Well here are a few craft ideas that will keep you sane this winter.
1. Felt Hand Warmers
Felt hand warmers are a wonderful gift to your loved ones or to yourself. These are simple crafts that can be done in an afternoon (even a couple pairs if you need them in a hurry).
You Will Need:
- At least 12 inches of felt, any color you like
- Sharp scissors
- Funnel
- Matching thread
- Needle
- Flaxseed
- Lavender flowers (optional)
How to Make Felt Hand Warmers::
First, cut two hearts and then lay them next to each other on their right sides. Sew from the bottom of the heart to the top, leaving a small opening to turn the heart inside out. Turn the hearts inside out and use the funnel to fill them both with flaxseed and lavender flowers if desired. Once filled, sew the last patch.
Warm your hand warmers in the microwave for about 30 seconds and put them in your mittens or pockets. Be sure to keep your hand warmers from moisture so they do not sprout!
2. Snowflake Wine Cork Ornament
Snowflake wine cork ornaments are a wonderful way to reuse corks and beautifully decorate your home.
You Will Need:
- A sharp knife
- Plenty of wine corks
- Hot glue gun
- Matching ribbon
How to Make a Snowflake Wine Cork Ornament:
Cut the ends of the corks off to have a clean edge. Then glue the round sides of the corks together to form a snowflake. When you have a snowflake you like, glue a ribbon to the top of the ornament. Allow to dry for two hours. Then test the ornament before hanging. I do this by gently tugging on each end to make sure it is safely secure. If you’re not sure, add more hot glue. Once finished hang around your home and enjoy your recycled art!
3. Simmering Potpourri
Simmering potpourri is a simple and wonderful way to make your home smell wonderful and warm during the winter.
You Will Need:
- About a quart of water
- Orange peels
- Star anise
- Allspice
- Cranberries
- Bay leaves
- Cinnamon
- Cloves
- And anything else you think will smell wonderful!
How to Make Simmering Potpourri:
Bring water to simmer in a large pot. Then you can slowly add the herbs to the pot and continue with the same heat. Keep an eye on the pot throughout the day and add a cup of water when needed. And that’s it! Enjoy!
