Friday Roundupby Kuhrich on Friday, January 15, 2016
Well, well, well. Here we are with our first Friday Roundup of the year. Today we’re going to discuss some plumbing fixture buying advice as well as some new products that you might be interested in. Let’s get to it.
First, there’s an industry (not very well-kept) secret about plumbing fixtures – specifically faucets. Most main line fixture manufacturers create 2 lines of faucets. One line is for plumbing showrooms and another line is for big box stores, like Lowes or Home Depot. The big box store lines typically have lesser quality finishes as well as a greater amount of plastic (rather than metal) internal parts. They do this in order to be able to offer lower priced products to consumers. You’ll probably notice that most plumbers avoid these types of fixtures and typically purchase their products from showrooms who offer higher quality faucets. With this info in mind, I typically try to shop around to find the highest quality products at the best possible price. For faucets and other plumbing fixtures, I like to shop at Build.com. They offer showroom grade fixtures at great prices and they’ll ship right to you.
A common problem that I hear about from owners of older houses is that they can’t find an efficient way to vent their clothes dryer. Whirlpool has recently released a new ventless dryer through their HybridCare line. This dryer uses heat pump technology to recycle hot air and eliminate the need for long vent runs to the exterior of your house. Check it out!
For those of you that worry about the boatloads of fecal matter located on a typical toilet lever, American Standard has released a new toilet with a hands-free flushing mechanism called their Studio Activate Toilet. Simply wave your hand 2″ from the sensor and bombs away! Check out this video to see this toilet in action. Hopefully you still remember to wash your hands.
