Funky Bathroom Decor

April 11, 2017

Let’s be honest, bathroom design can be one of the most boring things to decide on. While modern aesthetics tend to lean towards whites or neutral colors, there just doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of room for imagination. That’s not to say that a neutral bathroom can’t look good, quite the opposite in fact, it’s just kind of overdone. So what does that leave you? You could go the contrasting black and white for a dynamic look. While it’s a strong aesthetic, it usually means you’re going to be shelling out a good bit of money to refit your bathroom fixtures. That or paint the walls black which… yeesh.

So instead of going the safe or the conservative route, why not shake things up a bit? Instead of the neutral, the plain, and the ordinary, it’s time to get FUNKY!

Dig that Fresh Color!

One of the best parts about going with a funky bathroom design is that you have so many more color options than you would otherwise. Bring in the strong primaries to create a colorful and bold pallet. Try blending in some purples and… dare we say it? Neon! If you want to break away from the ordinary, then color is a quick and easy way to go about it.

A little wary of rocking the neon green in the bathroom? That’s okay. Why not start small at first and see how you feel about it. Quite a surprising number of bathroom accessories come in some pretty amazing colors, neons not excluded which can add a fun little pop of color, without feeling too busy or overwhelming.

Play with Your Wall Coverings

If you really want to step outside the realm of the ordinary and have some fun with your bathroom design, why not try changing up some of the materials you’re using for the walls. While you’ll still need a drywall base, we’ve seen some pretty awesome use of materials to really change the game. One of our favorites was the use of old metal license plates to cover the walls. How awesome would that be to connect to your den or man cave? Metal signs not your bag? We’ve seen brick interior walls, wooden siding, and even some unlikely wallpaper all used to create a brand new look and feel for these funky water closets.

Tile and Lights

When you’re building a new bathroom or just remodeling an existing one, take some time and give a little thought to your material options. You can really pull off some great looks with a little creative tile laying. If you’re artistically inclined, consider building your own tile mosaics to add a lot of visual interest without having to spend a lot of money in the process.

Lighting is another important facet to designing the perfect funky bathroom. Take a look at some retro or vintage light fixtures to shed a little light on your design. If you haven’t had a chance, take a look at the old school style “Edison” bulbs which we just think are really neat.

Funky, retro, and vintage are all design styles that can offer a lot of visual interest to your bathroom as well as giving it a truly unique look. If you’re still a little shy about diving head first into an “outside the lines” design, just remember that you can do a little bit at a time to see how well it works for you!
