Pros and Cons of Swimming Pools For a Custom Homeby Kuhrich on Monday, July 15, 2013
If you’re thinking of building a custom house, one thing you’re probably considering is whether to add in a swimming pool. You dream of hot summer days spent lounging by the pool, swimming with friends and family and all the fun you can have with a swimming pool. But, is a swimming pool really a great idea for your custom home?
Here are some pros and cons of having a swimming pool:
– Expense: On the pro side, having a swimming pool built does add to the value of the finished property. On the con side, however, it rarely adds enough value to justify the cost of construction and there are additional expenses such as water filtration systems, chemicals and other expenses associated with a pool.
– Maintenance: On the pro side, a well-maintained pool is fun, especially if you enjoy swimming and live in an area that is consistently hot such as Florida or the West. On the con side, you do have continuing expenses such as chemicals and having someone clean it if you don’t take the time and effort to do it yourself.
– Accessories: Part of the fun factor for a pool is the stuff you use around it and in it. From lounge chairs to pool toys, all adds to the fun you can have with friends and family with a pool. The pros are the fun, the cons are the expenses.
– Liability: One aspect of pool ownership deals with responsibility. If you have a family, especially small kids, you have to be well aware of the liability factors of owning a pool. Also, if you have a diving board, this adds to the liability factor as well. Injuries do happen, but these are factors that also add immense levels of enjoyment to owning and using a pool as well.
Essentially what it comes down to is carefully balancing the fun and enjoyment you can have with a pool versus the expenses and liabilities that having a swimming pool added to your custom home will imply. Owning a pool can be a hassle, but it can add levels of enjoyment to your life that you’ve always wanted.
