Winter Is A Great Time For Home Improvements

February 11, 2014

There’s something about the cold weather that zaps your energy and makes you want to sit around the house like a hairball. Instead of slouching on the couch wishing Old Man Winter would croak, use the time to make some improvements around the house. Simple home improvements such as freshening up your wall color, organizing your closet, installing a wall backsplash and updating your doors are perfect to tackle when you’re stuck inside.

Break out the paintbrush

Painting the walls and the ceilings can freshen up the look of your entire home. If your walls are eggshell white or beige, don’t be afraid to kick things up a notch (or two). Add some bold colors to your favorite rooms. If you really want to go wild, you can experiment with a little texture. Even though it’s chilly outside, remember to crack your windows so you don’t get high off of paint fumes.

Give your closet a facelift

Add shelves to your closet to customize it to meet your storage needs. Sort through your clothes and decide which ones you’re going to keep. You can box the rest of them up and give them to charity. Don’t forget to add a shoe rack over the door so you’ll have a place to store your footwear.

Make a splash in the kitchen

The right backsplash can give your kitchen some attitude and bring out the beauty in your countertops and cabinets. If your kitchen is already spicy, a neutral backsplash can pull the look together without overwhelming your décor. If the kitchen in hum-drum, a textured or vibrantly colored splash is all it takes to jazz things up.

Give new life to those outdated interior doors. Updating them is as simple as slapping on a coat of paint, adding new hardware and adding crown molding. The color of paint and type of hardware you use will depend on the style of your home and your personal tastes.

Instead of spending your winter sprawled on the couch, make the most of those blustery days by doing some home improvement projects around the house. Painting, refurbishing, making a backsplash and redoing the closets are just some of the projects you can tackle this season
