4 Mistakes to Avoid with Luxe Home Decor
January 24, 2019Luxe home decor is all about decadence, luxury, and elegance. Luxe can be found in a large statement piece or something more minimalist for some subtle sophistication. The balance of luxe is creating luxurious decor without the room coming across as gaudy, garish, or overdone. Here are a few mistakes to avoid with luxe home decor:
Mistake #1 – Using Too Much Brass
Brass can add a touch of elegance to a room and makes a great accent to your decor. It’s a great way to add the luxe home decor trend to your home and it’s versatile. It can be a great fit for lighting, picture frames, or furniture frames. However, too much brass can easily overwhelm a room and it can be easy to go overboard. Stick to a couple of elements and use brass as an accent in a couple of places to keep it balanced.
For example, if you’re going to have a brass bar cart or drink trolley in the room, it may be more effective to leave it at that or include some smaller brass accents instead of also having brass furniture frames. On the other hand, if you’re planning to use a few pieces of furniture with brass frames, it’s likely a better balance to keep additional brass accents to a minimum and to choose a different style of bar cart or drink trolley, if you still plan to have one.
Mistake #2 – Making Everything the Same Fabric
Luxe does include opulent, luxurious materials and matching fabrics can create a gorgeous look. But, if everything is the same fabric, or worse, the same print, the room can become bland or even come across as tacky.
Your fabrics should coordinate, but it’s usually a good idea to mix it up across what you use for curtains or drapes, throw pillows, upholstery on furniture, rugs, and other areas. That’s not to say that you can’t have the same fabric in a few areas, just be sure to vary it for the other decor in the room.
Mistake #3 – Getting Everything on the Cheap
Another important aspect of luxe is fine, high-quality craftsmanship. So, going for low-quality cheap items is a one of the mistakes to avoid with luxe. You may get lucky and be able to get some great items at a nice price, but you definitely don’t want to try to incorporate the luxe trend by buying cheaply-made items.
It’s fine to try and find things at a discount as long as the items are well-made and beautiful. Regardless of price, you should make sure the items you’re purchasing are durable, well-made, beautiful, and worth the investment. In the case of luxe home decor, you can’t sacrifice quality in favor of a lower cost as this can often leave you with tacky or gaudy decor.
Mistake #4 – Displaying Too Many Knick-Knacks
One of the mistakes to avoid with luxe home decor is doing too much or displaying too much. Knick-knacks and small decorations are a great way to incorporate decor trends into a room without overwhelming it. However, as with any type of decor, too many knick-knacks or small decorations around the room can be overkill. If your smaller decor items are taking over most of the surfaces or shelves in a room, it can make any space look and feel cluttered.
Even if all of these items are elegant and luxurious, too many of them in too many places can make your room come across as messy, disorganized, and cluttered – essentially, a far cry from elegant luxury. Instead of trying to display everything or fill every surface with stuff, focus on a few areas of the room and display only a couple of items in those areas that will help enhance the space without getting in the way.
The luxe home decor trend may be about decadence and feature opulent materials, but it’s easy to go overboard and end up getting the opposite effect. By avoiding these mistakes with luxe home decor, you’re well on your way to a more elegant, balanced look to your space.
