7 Ceiling Design Ideas
June 13, 2023Ceilings are an often overlooked element in your house. Most ceilings are a basic white slate. However, there is a lot of potential in your ceiling to add a fun design element to your custom home. Here are a few ceiling design ideas to try in your custom home design:
1. Work With the Beams
You don’t need to leave your beams bare to add some character to your ceiling. Painting them a contrasting color will add glam to your design. Or, consider painting them a lighter or darker hue than the rest of your ceiling. Painted ceilings can work well and stand out when done right.
However, if you want to bring a natural and earthy feel into your home design, leaving your beams exposed and stained in a dark finish will add warmth to your home. Exposed beams are one of the design ideas for ceilings and also a popular loft decor idea to try.
2. Wallpaper Part (or All) of Your Ceiling
Is there a part of your ceiling that is a fun design element, such as a vault or a curvature? Consider wallpapering just that element to highlight and bring some drama. But if you’d like, wallpaper the whole ceiling.
Embracing wallpaper is an easier way to bring color and design to your walls and ceilings, and is a popular modern Victorian decor idea. For an understated look, pick a wallpaper that matches the rest of your room or wall color. The subtle difference will still catch the eye and bring attention to that detail.
3. Embrace Rustic Design
If you love the farmhouse style, why not embrace the rustic design on your ceiling? Ask for weathered wooden beams and ceiling. This is an idea for rustic kitchen & living room decor that will give your kitchen or living room plenty of character but will also add a warm and earthy element.
4. Try a Tray Ceiling With Wooden Beams
Tray ceilings are a popular design element but can be elevated by being accented with wooden beams. The wooden beams add contrast, especially if you choose a darker wood finish. However, you can choose any finish you like to match the feel and style of the rest of your home. Other decor options like this are things to consider when choosing tray ceilings.
5. Choose a High Gloss Finish
If you want an understated look that still adds some drama and glamour to your ceiling, choose a paint in a high gloss finish. Most ceilings are painted in a flat finish but using a lacquer or gloss finish will catch the eye and is a dramatic option.
6. Opt for Subtle Contrast
If your room already has plenty of interesting design elements but you still want to add a twist to the ceiling, opt for a subtle contrast in the ceiling. Choose a slightly lighter shade of paint than your wall color. This will add a bit of contrast without going overboard.
And if you have white or cream-colored walls, choose a gray or darker cream-colored paint for your ceiling. Contrast doesn’t have to mean opposite bold colors, it can be as simple as a shade or two lighter or darker.
7. Add Drama With a Black Ceiling
A black ceiling will always add wow and drama to your room. Painting your ceiling black is a good way to dip your toes into using black in your home. It’s not quite as overwhelming and dramatic as painting an entire room black, but it still adds a wow factor. It can also help you create a Gothic look if you pair it with other Gothic home decor ideas.
